Preparing Your Sewer Line for the Holidays

While the holidays are fast approaching, the last thing on most people’s minds is their sewer line. Planning for trips to see loved ones or getting your own house ready for family gatherings are the top priorities this time of year.

It’s a good time to get your sewer line cleaned and checked before your next gathering. If there are roots or obstructions in the line, you may experience slow draining of your secondary lines like bathtubs, washing machines, and sink lines. If you have guests staying with you, an increased demand on the plumbing may lead to a backup.

If you’ll be hosting dinner for everyone, don’t forget to keep grease out of the sink drains when cooking and cleaning the dishes afterwards. Grease buildup in the lines can create restricted flow over time and cause a backup.

It’s also important to remind visitors that baby wipes and flushable wipes are not actually flushable. The only things that should be flushed in a toilet are toilet paper and human waste. While some flushable wipes may break down over time, it can take a lot longer than expected and if those wipes are getting caught up on roots or debris that are present in the line, they will not be sent through the entire sewer line into the city sewer system.

Don’t forget to keep an eye on the children as well. We’ve found many small toys in sewer lines that were flushed on accident by kids playing in bathrooms! Those toys are definitely more fun to play with outside of the bathroom, so it’s a good idea to remind children not to play in toilets.

If you have never had a sewer scope and you do not know the condition of your line, please call us today to schedule an appointment. Having the line reviewed prior to having a backup or repairs will save you time and money.
